Doctor Carrie Rubin was kind enough to share some hard-earned insight and advice on writing contests. If you’ve thought about the efficacy of entering one, her article is well worth the read.
Her first novel, The Seneca Scourge, took the Silver Award in the Readers’ Favorite contest. She was edged out by actor/director Eriq La Salle.

As you know, I was at the Readers Favorite Awards this year … and last year, too. My wife and my son (who happened to be on a photo assignment in Miami that weekend) came with me. I don’t remember seeing or meeting Carrie, but there were a lot of folks there…and my old noggin doesn’t remember everything.
Readers Favorite is a legit review source. There’s a reading fee, like most places, but you can’t buy a GOOD review. I’d actually go to Kirkus Reviews if I could afford them. They’re one of the oldest, most respected review operations in the world … but they have a hefty $495 reading fee. I’ve always suspected it was that high to discourage all the “get-a-quick-review-and-post-it-on-your-web-site” folks.
But Carrie’s post raises legit concerns, and maybe highlights some sour grapes on the part of the anonymous blogger she came across. Her book was a good one. However, selling it is harder than winning an award.
Thanks for the post, Tim.
