According to Wikipedia, “An armistice is a formal agreement of warring parties to stop fighting.”
In 1918 an Armistice between the Allies and the Central Powers was signed in Marshal Ferdinand Foch’s private railway car. The signing took place in the Forest of Compiegne, about 60 kilometers north of Paris.
The Armistice took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – 11:00 a.m. on November 11th. It brought an end to the hostilities of World War I, a war in which almost 10 million soldiers died, over 21 million were wounded and nearly 8 million were reported missing.
It was the Great War, the War to End All Wars.
64 years later Joseph Ambrose, an 86 year-old veteran of the War to End All Wars, attended the dedication day parade for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. He carried the flag that covered the casket of his son, who was killed in the Korean War.

In life and death, gratitude is the redeemer.
For what seems lost
Now blooms,
And that is eternal.
T.W.~ thank you for remembrances.

I echo Dannie’s sentiment, Tim. I heard this poem today, and thought to share with you. The author of it is unknown, but there is wisdom in the words. It’s called: It is the Veteran.
It is the Veteran, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the Veteran, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the Veteran, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the Veteran, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.
It is the Veteran, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the Veteran, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.
