I’ve just about given up on Amazon offering the updated content for my novel, The Valley Walker. I’ve had online chats with them and emailed their KDP Help people, but the updated content still isn’t being offered. I must be doing something wrong.
There is a way to get around this problem, while the book is still free.
I found out that if I go to Amazon’s Manage Your Content and Devices page and delete the book from my device, I can then purchase the new content… for free. But hold on now. It takes a while for the deletion to actually take place. It’s not instantaneous. The request is put in a queue, and the server gets to it in its own sweet time.
Luckily, there is still ample time left in the Free Promotion. Delete the book, go get some coffee, live life and come back to it in your own sweet time. Buy the book for fee and carry on.
If you don’t want to do this, or can’t get the updated content let me know. (The updated content has a dedication that will actually show up in the table of contents.) I’ll be happy to email you a copy.
You can load the file onto your device through the USB port, or email it to your Kindle’s email address. Go back to your Manage Your Content and Devices page, then download it to your device. It will show up in the Docs section, not in the Books section, of your device.
I know, this is a hell of a lot of trouble to go through to get a book, (And it’s just a book), but as a great man once said:
“It’s only rock and roll, but I like it.”
Thanks for the tip, Tim! I kept trying to update my version yesterday and figured I was doing something wrong and was going to get in touch with you today. I will delete the old version, run some errands, have a drink (will toast to you, of course) and then download the new version. Glad you figured it out!

All is good. Missed hearing from you, though.

Hmm, I’m not sure I have the updated version or not. I see a dedication (To Sunshine), but it isn’t in the table of contents. I see it right before the first page. Does this sound right?
How frustrating this must be for you, but you have a good attitude about it. 🙂

I’m wondering if they have some serious latency times in their server. Hugh Howey was saying something about how slow Amazon can be in a blog post.
I deleted my old purchased copy this morning. I went out and worked in the yard all day, then just now bought it (for free) again, and it wasn’t the latest version.
The latest version should have the dedication, and a header for that page that says dedication. It should also show up in the table of contents, but I haven’t been able to buy the latest version yet to see for sure. My file that I converted with Calibre does. I did that so it would be the beginning of the book and no one would miss who it was dedicated to.

Well, I have the one with the dedication at the beginning but maybe I’ll delete it and then get it again tomorrow just to be sure. Thanks for the info.

I just checked again, and I see mine does have the dedication in the table of contents. So I must have the updated version. Not sure why I didn’t see it the first time around. I downloaded another one on my husband’s amazon account and they look to be the same.

Glad to hear that, Doc. Thanks for letting me know. 🙂

Wanna hear something strange? The version on my Kindle app on my iPad has a dedication “To Sunshine” but the one on my actual Kindle does not. Ah . . . the mystery continues.

Oh good Lord. I just looked and my iPad Kindle version doesn’t have a table of contents!
What is the big project in your yard? Taking out all your frustrations with Amazon?

We’re doing flower beds. Sounds simple, but I’ve turned it into an earth-moving extravaganza. Moving dirt is something I can handle. 🙂

Probably easier than trying to get your book updated! And less stressful!

EPub files don’t have a table of contents, for whatever reason. That’s what the iPad uses. There should be some kind of function to view the contents, though, and it should show up there. I sent you the very latest and greatest.
Had to do some tweeking on Calibre to make it so, but I muddled through.

Oh, Tim! We will persevere and while queuing, we can rock and roll.

Crazy, but all good. I deleted my old purchased copy this morning, just purchased it again and got the same content I deleted. Maybe their server is overloaded with all the self-published authors. Ah well, guess I’ll have to slow down. Have a cup of coffee and some dinner.

Thanks for the tip. I keep being reminded I already have the book (I know that, but which one, which one… spin the wheel again, Vanna, let’s solve this puzzle!)
This could be a good thing, you know, because of the numerous inquiries about the download. 🙂 Meredith

The new version has the dedication in the table of contents. I tweeked Calibre to have it come out that way so no readers would miss who the book is dedicated to.
