I don’t re-blog a lot, but when I came across this thought-provoking post by Kristen Lamb on the dangers of over-using the HARD sell on social media, I thought it was worth passing on.
Basically she says that a constant barrage of “Buy my book!!!!” is like clear-cutting a forest, a practice that will inevitably lead to this.
Huh.
She says it much better, of course, so you ought to take a look.
Her point about telemarketers is excellent. That is what I think of the writers who use social media NON-STOP to promote their book.

Pretty good analogy.

Kristen is a great marketer and writer and she is someone to listen too. Some people do seem to have the knack of inundating the media without turning many people off– but only a few can do that. I’ve found passive marketing works best for me. Passive marketing is just trying to be friendly and only talking about books once in a while. The rest of the time just have fun with new friends.

Kristen knows her stuff, that’s for sure. I’m pretty passive about marketing myself, and have been told that I’m too passive. Don’t really know if being aggressive about marketing is in me. I just want to write.
Thanks for stopping by Dannie.
