Stumbling through the process of converting the book to the correct format for the Kindle was like a lot of things I do… learning by the slumped shoulders and flat forehead method.
Calibre ended up being the way to go for me. It worked the first time, but I ended up tweaking the table of contents and structure detection parameters to get what I wanted. I’m still looking for a good way to center text vertically on a page. The word processor command just doesn’t seem to convert to html.
Some people suggested using Sigil, and I took a look at it. In the end, I guess I’m just too lazy and hard-headed. Hey… what can I tell you? I’m old and set in my ways.
All in all, I was pretty pleased with the end product that Calibre put out. The document navigation sidebar works like it’s supposed to, and the table of contents winds up being at the end… not really part of the book.
I just find it pretty amusing that it ends up in mobi format, and I could never get the MobiPocket converter to work.

I expect I will use Calibre when I get around to publishing an e-book. I’m not at that point yet.
Have you done Nook (EPUB) also, or are you not bothering with that? The writers I know who have done both report that almost all of their sales come from the Kindle.
(BTW, I popped over for a visit because Maggie tagged us both in the Blog Hop thing. Interesting blog. I’ve never seen one before that doesn’t do the reverse chronological thing.)

I had it available for Nook for a while, then removed it to take advantage of the KDP Select. It will be available for Nook again on the 19th of this month. Stay tuned. 🙂

The posts are in the reverse chronological order, but sorted by category. I did a custom menu.
